Being amongst world’s largest networks of railways is Indian Railways. It a state owned Indian enterprise which is operated and owned by the Indian Government through the Railways Ministry. It constitutes a track of 115,000 km covering over 7,172 stations and 65,436 km.

In India, the snappy or the rapid transportation basically consists of monorail, bus, metro and rail systems. In 1984, the first rapid transportation system came into being, that is, the Kolkata Metro. Then another rapid transit system that came into existence was the Chennai MRTS. The first Indian modernized metro, which is the Delhi metro, was the third rapid transition system and it began its operations in the year 2002. In November 2013, Rapid Metro Rail started in Gurgaon. It is the first Indian metro, which is privately owned as well as operated.

The planning has been done by the Indian government in 2009 that all the cities in India that have a population of more than 2 million, will be having a metro rail system. And a sum of 2000 billion would be invested on the same in the next 10 years.
